2021-2022: Wikidata training workshops and Data Clinics

As part of the Linked Digital Future Initiative, CAPACOA, the Conseil québécois du théâtre, and the Regroupement québécois de la danse invite you to attend a new series of Wikidata workshops and data clinics for the 2021-2022 season.

A new series of free training workshops dedicated to Wikidata

After a 2020-2021 season that resulted in 12,700 edited items and 1,450 new items created by the participants, we’re excited to launch a brand new season of Wikidata workshops!

In order to reach a wider audience, we changed our schedule.

  • Workshop schedule:
    • The first Wednesday of each month, from October 2021 to May 2022.
    • Workshops start at 3:30 p.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).
    • The eight workshops on Wikidata will be delivered alternatingly in French and English
    • The first workshop in English will be held on November 3, 2021 (see our agenda below)
  • All workshops are designed to meet the needs of beginners as well as experts.
  • You will always be able to enrich Wikidata directly with your own data.

The workshop objectives are to give Wikidata beginners new knowledge, the opportunity to put their learnings into practice, and for the more seasoned “Wikidatians”, to deepen their skills.

Each workshop is an opportunity to exchange and collaborate in a friendly approach.

All levels of ability are welcome! We encourage workshop registrants to personalize their workshop experience by sharing and collaborating with fellow workshop attendees.

Learn with Wikidata gurus

The practical Wikidata workshops are led by Simon Villeneuve and Miguel Tremblay, experts in the Wikimedia universe.

Simon has about ten years of experience as a trainer for the different wikis hosted by the Wikimedia foundation (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wiki Commons but also Wikisources and Wikinews). Simon, who contributed 10% of the French content on Wikipedia, is recognized as the fourth largest contributor in the world on Wikidata! He is also a physics and astronomy teacher at Cégep de Chicoutimi since 2005. Since 2020, he has been coaching the participants of our practical workshops in Wikidata.

Miguel has been contributing to the Wikimedia universe since 2003 under the pseudonym Dirac. With more than 9000 contributions to Wikipedia, 150 contributions to Wiki Commons, he is on Wikidata the founder and animator of the Wikiproject on weather observations. As a committed popularizer, Miguel contributes strongly to documenting the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec on Wikipedia. He is also a physicist and works at the Canadian Meteorological Centre, notably on open data. Since 2020, he has been coaching the participants of our practical workshops in Wikidata.

Cultural Venues Datathon, from April 25 to May 2, 2022

Cultural venues are an important part of the performing arts ecosystem in Canada

Theatres, concert halls, black boxes, music venues: these buildings located across Canada provide the best possible settings for audiences to experience the outstanding performances our artists can deliver.

However, there is still no comprehensive open database of performing arts buildings. This makes it difficult for these venues and the productions they present to be found online by audiences.

Let’s change that! Click here for more informations and register!

Data clinics

For the first time, we’re encouraging groups to organize their own data clinics with the support of the CAPACOA Wikidata team and its partners.

How does a data clinic work?

The mission of a data clinic is to gather a group of people around a tailor-made activity dedicated to the creation or enrichment of data that already exists in or is being added to Wikidata. This data clinic support can be requested by an organization, an association or a group of people who wish to support the Linked Digital Future’s goals to increase the representation of the performing arts sector in Wikidata. No prerequisite is necessary, participants don’t need to be Wikidata experts. Our team of facilitators will ensure the active participation of all in a constructive and pleasant atmosphere.

How to organize your data clinic?

As this activity is tailor-made, we invite you to contact us by email here: ldf.anl@capacoa.ca.

Let us know your intentions, your needs and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Additional resources: the Wikiproject Performing arts

This Wikiproject* gathers all the reflections and references useful for the creation and enrichment of data related to the performing arts in Wikidata. It is here that the best practices around the documentation of performing arts in Wikidata and for Wikidata are detailed. Supported by a large international community, the Wikiproject Performing Arts is an important reference at your disposal.

This is both an authoritative guide on all matters related to performing arts and Wikidata, and a collaborative space for enhancing the presence of the performing arts in Wikidata.

More Wikidata resources are recommended in the Resources area of this website and you can take the tours on the Wikidata website.

* A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is the organization of a group of participants in an established wiki to achieve specific editing goals, or to achieve goals related to a specific area of knowledge (Source: Wikipédia)
